BROOKE GLADSTONE: So, as we approach the end of this week’s show, we want to conclude with one final issue.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models for Monetizing the Newspaper Industry.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: Yes, our jingle. We've been playing it for about a year now, and we thought it was time to make a new one. OTM producer Mark Phillips, who composed and performed it, has brought in a few more options for you to consider and vote on via our Facebook page. More on that later. But first, onto the audition. Mark, hello.
MARK PHILLIPS: Hey.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: So Mark, what have you brought us?
MARK PHILLIPS: People said that the last one was morose and sad, so I wanted to go a little bit happier. So let's give this one a try.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models to Monetize the Newspaper Industry.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: [LAUGHS]
BOB GARFIELD: I feel like going out and buying a tube of Gleem.
[LAUGHTER] It’s – that’s a jingle, that there.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: [LAUGHS]
MARK PHILLIPS: The next one, I wanted to go for short and sweet. Let's hear that one.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models for Monetizing the Newspaper Industry.
BOB GARFIELD: Yeah, it’s more of a sting, right, than a jingle.
[LAUGHTER] It’s so brief.
MARK PHILLIPS: Yeah.
BOB GARFIELD: And it’s got a kind of a hip-hop vibe to it, which makes it much more contemporary, considering we are both, you know, elderly Jews.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: Also, if you think about how we drop these things randomly into the show, that one would go in and out and leave no residue behind.
[LAUGHTER]
MARK PHILLIPS: The next one is - disturbing. It’s a truly weird one. I hope the listeners do not pick this one.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models for Monetizing the Newspaper Industry.
BOB GARFIELD: Yeah, that’s very People’s Temple right down at the end.
[LAUGHTER] I, I, I just – [SIGHS] no!
BROOKE GLADSTONE: I like it.
[LAUGHTER]
MARK PHILLIPS: This next one, I like this one. This one’s good. It’s kind of country.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models to Monetize the Newspaper Industry.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: Does it have a certain Depression quality? Because that would be appropriate.
MARK PHILLIPS: Yeah, it’s got a Dust Bowl vibe.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: [LAUGHS]
BOB GARFIELD: I'm depressed.
[LAUGHTER]
MARK PHILLIPS: The - this one could be my favorite.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models for Monetizing the Newspaper Industry.
[LAUGHTER]
BROOKE GLADSTONE: The trouble is is that it leaves a residue.
[LAUGHTER] Once you've heard it, it’s very hard to go back to the interview.
BOB GARFIELD: I'm uh, profoundly disturbed, and I, I can't even say why. It, it just sounds futuristic in a world beyond a - a gender or something.
[MARK LAUGHS]
BROOKE GLADSTONE: I know what it is, Bob. What you heard is the digital future that doesn't include you.
BOB GARFIELD: Right, that might be it!
BROOKE GLADSTONE: Any more?
MARK PHILLIPS: We have one more. I wanted to go - a little more dramatic.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: Yeah. This is an existential issue.
JINGLE: Present and Future Business Models for Monetizing the Newspaper Industry.
[PAUSE]
BROOKE GLADSTONE: I love that one.
[LAUGHTER]
MARK PHILLIPS: It leaves a residue.
[LAUGHTER]
BOB GARFIELD: [LAUGHING] It’s so – [LAUGHING/CRYING]
BROOKE GLADSTONE: So Mark, where do we leave this?
MARK PHILLIPS: If people want to vote on which is their favorite, they can go to our Facebook page, which is Facebook.com/onthemedia, and all these clips will be listed there. And you can just click “Like” if you like it, and the winner will be our new jingle.
