BOB GARFIELD: This is On the Media. I'm Bob Garfield.
BROOKE GLADSTONE: And I'm Brooke Gladstone with an update. Last week, on the show, Ken Tomlinson, chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, explained how he hoped to correct what he sees as a left-leaning bias in public broadcasting with the creation of PBS shows that tilt right. The Public Broadcasting act forbids CPB to produce or distribute programs. On Thursday, CPB'S inspector general decided to investigate Tomlinson's alleged actions to influence program content on PBS. Democratic Congressmen John Dingle of Michigan and David Obey of Wisconsin requested the probe, after a New York Times' story earlier this month about the politicization of CPB. Tomlinson issued a statement saying he welcomed the investigation, (quote) "I look forward to working with the Inspector General and with the Congress to clear up with finality distortions and press reports in elsewhere about out work to bring more diversity to public broadcasting. "There would be no debate on this issue if more programs on PBS reflected the high journalistic standards of the NewsHour with Jim Lehrer." [MUSIC]
