Brian Lehrer: It's The Brian Lehrer Show on WNYC. Good morning, again, everyone. It is membership drive arts and culture quiz time. Have you been paying attention to music, movies, TV, the theater in 2023 and know enough to maybe get three in a row right and win a Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat? 888-- No, it's our on-air number, not our pledge number. Forgive me for that mistake. 212-433-WNYC, if you want to try your hand, and Succession watchers, yes, there are Succession questions in this quiz.
212-433-WNYC, 433-9692. Who wants to play? Call up. If you get three arts and culture quiz of 2023 answers in a row right, we will send you the new Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. Who wants to play? Again, 212-433-WNYC, 212-433-9692. It's membership drive arts and culture 2023 quiz time. While your calls are coming in, I will reset the context for this one last day for this last day of the drive.
In our annual spring membership drive, we've been doing this 11:00 AM to noon fundraising party every day. We've been doing the serious stuff in the first hour and having a fundraising party in the second hour. What happens at this event? Well, we're doing three segments each day in the eleven o'clock to noon fundraising party. Segment one is a low-stakes pop quiz. We don't give grades, we do give prizes. We've had news quizzes, geography quizzes, a history quiz, and now this arts and culture of 2023 quiz.
Then segment two, we're bringing back our most fun or interesting call-ins of 2023 for a second round of participation. Today, it's going to be your guilty pleasures and we're ending each of these hours with things to do around here this summer and we've got a bunch more music tips coming up later this hour. It's our 11:00 AM to noon fundraising party right now with our arts and culture of 2023 quiz. Who's been paying attention to music, television, movies, the theater? 212-433-WNYC, 433-9692. Let's start with Jessie in Brooklyn. Jessie, you're ready to play?
Jessie: Yes.
Brian Lehrer: Hey there. The Eras Tour, it's called The Eras Tour, is her first tour since 2018 with 52 dates, 20 stadiums, and 10 albums. This epic performer plays for three hours hitting 44 songs. Who is she?
Jessie: Oh my God, Taylor Swift. My niece just went.
Brian Lehrer: Ha, she is Taylor Swift. Bonus question. You do not get penalized if you get this wrong but you get a point if you get it right. Her fans are called?
Jessie: Swifties.
Brian Lehrer: Swifties is absolutely right. All right. For the Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat, another epic performer is on tour, in his case for the first time with his band since 2017. That tour kicked off in February and is slated to continue all the way until December. Right now, they're in Europe. This 73-year-old rocker and the name of his band. That's what we're asking. You have to get both. The 73-year-old rocker and the name of his band on tour now. Can you do it?
Jessie: Is it the same band? I think it's Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
Brian Lehrer: That is absolutely right. You've been paying enough attention to music in 2023 that you've won yourself a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. Congratulations, Jenna. Here is Linda in Manhattan. Linda, you're on WNYC. Hi there.
Linda: Hi, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: All right, and here we go. This year, the Majestic Theater saw the curtain close on the longest-running show in Broadway history from Andrew Lloyd Webber. The show was?
Linda: Phantom of the Opera.
Brian Lehrer: Yes, it was. Also from Broadway this year, two revivals that have been nominated for Tony Awards. The first one, a Sondheim musical, the story of the demon barber of Fleet Street. His name and the name of the musical, which are one and the same is?
Linda: Sweeny Todd.
Brian Lehrer: It is Sweeny Todd. Absolutely. This play by Suzan-Lori Parks features three-card monte and tells the story of two troubled brothers aptly named Lincoln and Booth. The play, which one? Suzan-Lori Parks, a Pulitzer way back in 2002 now revived is?
Linda: Topdog/Underdog.
Brian Lehrer: That is Topdog/Underdog. You've gotten three in a row right in a heartbeat. Hang on, Linda. Very, very good job. We're going to get your address off the air so we can send you a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap. We're going to go out to Denville, New Jersey next then, see if Ellen knows her arts and culture from 2023. Hi, Ellen.
Ellen: Hi.
Brian Lehrer: At the Oscars, one film topped all the others with 11 nominations and seven wins. That movie is?
Ellen: Everything Everywhere All at Once.
Brian Lehrer: Absolutely right. Seven Oscars, can you name two, any of the people or categories that it won? Any two of the seven, either the person or the category.
Ellen: Michelle Yeoh for Best Actress.
Brian Lehrer: Absolutely right.
Ellen: And was it Best Picture?
Brian Lehrer: It did win Best Picture, so that is absolutely right. All right. For the baseball hat, a big thing happened in episode three of this final season of Succession. I said there'd be Succession questions. It's not a spoiler for most people because this was over a month ago, but if you haven't gotten up to segment three yet, episode three, you can turn your radio off for about a minute. What happened to the patriarch, the Rupert Murdoch-ish character, Logan Roy, portrayed by Brian Cox?
Ellen: Oh, in episode three?
Brian Lehrer: Yes.
Ellen: He died.
Brian Lehrer: He died. He died on an airplane. That is three in a row right. Our listeners are on an arts and culture roll. They're TV watchers. They're music watchers. They go to the theater. Neil in Brooklyn, ready to play? Do we have Neil in Brooklyn here? Neil once, Neil twice. Let's try Alana in Bed-Stuy. Alana, are you there?
Alana: Hi, Brian.
Brian Lehrer: Hey there. We've got another Succession question here. Succession is a show about a family who own and operate a media empire. Well, it's not really a Succession question, we're just making a segue to real life because meanwhile in real life on Fox News, this very high-profile broadcaster just lost his job.
Alana: Tucker Carlson.
Brian Lehrer: It is. Next question. What's the nickname given to children of celebrities and industry insiders who have found fame and success, seemingly through connections or because of their parents' fame? This might be the hardest question.
Alana: Nepo babies.
Brian Lehrer: Nepo babies is right. That's two. What is the name of Prince Harry's autobiography published in January of this year? Do you know it, as a book title sneaks into this arts and culture quiz?
Alana: I think it's called Spare.
Brian Lehrer: Spare is right. We are going to spare a WNYC Brian Lehrer Show baseball hat for you. That is awesome. We've got time for one more, and it's going to be Pat in Maplewood. Hi, Pat. Ready to play?
Pat: Yes.
Brian Lehrer: True or false, vinyl records sold more units than CDs in the US last year for the first time since 1987.
Pat: True.
Brian Lehrer: Yes, that happened.
Pat: True.
Brian Lehrer: We did a segment on it in March. Number two, this American activist, actor, and singer of the hit songs Jump in the Line and Jamaica Farewell died at age 96 one month ago tomorrow. He is?
Pat: Oh, no. I have no idea. What were the names of the songs again?
Brian Lehrer: Jamaica Farewell and Jump in the Line.
Pat: I have no idea.
Brian Lehrer: Oh, okay, Pat.
Pat: Oh, I feel terrible. [laughs]
Brian Lehrer: Thanks for trying. All right, but because we want to give away one more baseball hat, let's see who's going to get that answer right. Thomas in Summit, do you know the answer to that question I just asked?
Thomas: Harry Belafonte.
Brian Lehrer: It was Harry Belafonte. Hang on, we're going to take your address and send you a Brian Lehrer Show baseball cap for knowing that. Listeners, thanks for playing our arts and culture 2023 quiz. Many of you were paying attention to TV, movies, books, the theater. Brian Lehrer on WNYC. Stay with us.
