Alison Stewart: A little more weekend programming activity. NYC Winter Jazzfest is underway, and earlier this week, we previewed two events happening this weekend, both dedicated to the historic Black Brooklyn cultural center, The East. The organization operated from 1969 to the mid-1980s, promoting art and business of Black Brooklynites around Bed-Stuy, and hosting countless performances for musicians like Pharoah Sanders and Max Roach.
Tomorrow at 4:00 PM, there will be a panel discussion about the venue's musical legacy, and on Sunday at 8:00 PM, the Crown Hill Theatre will host A Night at the East, featuring jazz veterans like Gary Bartz and Billy Hart, plus later generation artists like Shabaka, Moor Mother, and Luke Stewart. Luke Stewart joined us yesterday in Studio 5 for a live performance. He was accompanied by the duo, Aquiles Navarro-- earlier in the week, I should say. He was accompanied by the duo Aquiles Navarro and Tcheser Holmes on trumpet and drums. All three are members of the music collective Irreversible Entanglements. The band stuck around after the interview to record one more song for us, so ahead of this show and this weekend, we wanted to share that with you. Here's Luke Stewart, Aquiles Navarro, and Tcheser Holmes with Pueblo.
